Mrs. Loftis-5th Grade Remote

Welcome to 5th Grade at Belle Creek Charter School!

Good evening!

As of 4:45 this evening, all grades have been updated in Infinite Campus. If your child has an "M" or "Missing" for any work in Infinite Campus, they are still able to complete it and turn it in. I will not take off points for late work as we are all adjusting to this new version of school and because I know there have been some internet connection issues for some families.

Students should be checking Infinite Campus and their school email frequently to see scores and feedback on assignments. If your child does not have a log-in for IC, please contact the front office. Parents should also be checking Infinite Campus on a regular basis to check on grades and/or any missing assignments.

A few important things about Infinite Campus

If your child tells you they turned in an assignment through Google Classroom and it has been marked as Missing in Infinite Campus, please do the following:

1. Have your student open the assignment in Google Classroom and show you their work. Any feedback and/or grades will also show in the assignment.

2. Have your child email me a screenshot of the completed work and give me 3-5 days to update in IC.

Infinite Campus has descriptions for assignments that show parents and students what the assignment was, how many points it is worth, and when it was assigned/when it was due.

Google Classroom is not always a reliable indicator of whether or not a student has completed and/or turned in an assignment. Marking the assignment "Turned In" does not mean the work is complete. Not all websites used with Google Classroom syncs grades, therefore Infinite Campus is the most reliable source for student scores and missing assignments.

Regardless of internet issues, students are expected to be logged into our Zoom Room on time and remain present unless explicitly told they may leave the class. If the internet connection drops, students should try rejoining our class. If they do not, their attendance will be changed to Absent and the front office will be notified. Your student is also expected to participate, even when their video feed is off. They may use Chat to type what they want to contribute or may unmute to speak it.

Thank you for your support at home and please let me know if you have any questions.

¡Buena noches!

In case you have not been receiving emails sent through Infinite Campus, here is what was sent on Friday, Aug. 28.

Happy Friday afternoon! I have a few observations and celebrations to share from yesterday's orientation. Overall, I think the day went quite well considering none of us had ever experienced that type of learning before and didn't really know what to expect. I know there were issues with audio and lagging video, and our technology teacher is aware and trying to offer solutions to teachers. Students having trouble handled their frustrations very well! I've had some very positive feedback from students on their reflection assignment.

I did notice some students working in a room with siblings, pets, TVs playing, etc. and would like to remind everyone about the importance of a calm and quiet learning environment where there will be limited distractions. Not only will this help your student, it will also reduce distractions to other students in the class when your child is on camera or is speaking during class. Please understand that I am trying to fit as much learning as possible into this new environment of school, and students' learning environments play a huge role in the amount of information students are able to absorb, process, and comprehend. Students should be away from phones, TVs, and other people (as much as possible) to create a learning environment similar to that of the face to face classroom setting.

A concern from yesterday is the amount of self-control displayed by a few students. Teachers are used to being able to redirect and refocus students as needed in the classroom, however that can be very challenging online as it it much less private due to lack of physical proximity. Students will need to be independent and show a high level of self-control at all times during school. Please have a conversation with your child about work ethic, integrity, and the importance of participating during class. Students will be held accountable for their participation and lack of thereof. They will also be held accountable for behaviors that distract others from their learning and teaching, such as making faces while their camera is on and typing in the chat area with messages that are not topic related.

Next week we will start with assignments and content learning. The weekly agenda will post in our Google Classroom on Sunday, and tasks will post on the day assigned. I will also share our agenda on my school web page.

Thank you for your support at home-
Mrs. Loftis

In case you have not been receiving emails sent through Infinite Campus, here is the information that has been shared since last Friday.

Please fill this out at your earliest convenience with helpful information about your child and remote learning. https://forms.gle/854APoLSZHwQLLZt5

An updated supply list for remote learning is posted to the left on this page, along with my Back to School presentation. Orientation is tomorrow from 8:30-3:30 with a break from 11:30-12:30.

Students will need to log in to their school Gmail account before tomorrow morning (the link is on the school's main webpage under Students) to make sure there are no issues. If your child is new to BCCS, does not remember their log-in, or has any problems logging in, please email Ms. Roddy directly as I do not have access to student email accounts. Her email is troddy@bellecreekcs.org.

Please have your child join our Google Classroom before tomorrow's orientation. GC can be found by clicking on the grid (looks like a waffle) in the upper right-hand corner of Gmail or any Google site. Your child should have received an email this week with a link to join the class. If your child cannot access his/her school Gmail, please contact Ms. Roddy before tomorrow morning to work out any problems. troddy@bellecreekcs.org

On Thursday morning at 8:25, students will need to use the Zoom link to our class meeting that will be posted on our Google Classroom page. If they have any issues with this, please have them email me right away as I will be taking attendance and reporting it to the office. mloftis@bellecreekcs.org

Included with Chromebook pick-up were packets for science, social studies, and beginning of the year activities, a math workbook for the first half of the year, and a school planner. Please have your child wait to work on any of the packets as they will be necessary materials for our first month of school. If the packets work well in a remote classroom, there will be additional packets available for pick-up at a later date. If you did not pick up these materials, please do so before Monday (at the latest) anytime between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. If you have any problems picking up the items, please contact the front office for assistance.
