Dear Parents,

Here’s what will be happening in 3rd grade this week.

Homework will come home today, the whole packet is due on Friday.

Assessments this week:

Friday:
-Spelling test
-End of unit reading test

Wednesdays is library day, students need to have their books back by Tuesday so they can check out new books on Wednesday! Even though we are not sending home reading logs, students should be reading at least 20 min per night.  “Reading 20 minutes a day exposes kids to a vast quantity of words (1.8 million in each school year, actually!). And this exposure makes children more likely to score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests.

Next week we will have a full day of NWEA testing in math and reading, this test will get the students beginning of the year scores so we can assess how much they grow this year. Test results will be discussed at fall conferences.

Weekly Update 9/1-9/5

Dear Parents,

Here’s what will be happening in 3rd grade this week.

No school on Monday!

Your child will be bringing a homework folder home again today. There will be a packet in the folder. This is the homework for the week. It is not expected that your child will complete the whole packet in one night. The entire packet is due on Friday. In it you will find a spelling list and Math homework that will reflect what we are working on in class. There will be a spelling test on Friday. If your student is struggling with doing their math homework independently please let me know.

Also during the week, your child will be bringing home stories that we cover in class. Please take a few minutes and let your child read the story to you. This will help to strengthen your child's reading skills.

Assessments this week:
Friday: Math
Friday: Spelling test

Wednesdays is library day, students need to have their books back by Tuesday so they can check out new books on Wednesday! Even though we are not sending home reading logs, students should be reading at least 20 min per night.  “Reading 20 minutes a day exposes kids to a vast quantity of words (1.8 million in each school year, actually!). And this exposure makes children more likely to score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. If you compare this to children who read just 5 minutes per day — and are therefore more likely to score in the 50th percentile — it’s easy to see how reading time translates to academic success. Meanwhile, a separate study involving almost 10 million students showed only those reading at least 15 minutes a day achieved accelerated reading gains. And those reading less were at risk of falling behind their peers.”

Our snack basket could still use some love, any individually packaged healthy snacks would be appreciated!

I hope everyone enjoys the three day weekend!
