Kindergarten Week 1.

2025-26 Lesson: 1. Welcome to Music

Materials: Recording of Whale Sounds, Whale Puppet, Circle on Floor, Room rules

Vocabulary: Echo, High, Low, Slow, Fast

Objectives: <Post on Board, Align with State Standards>

  1. Students will demonstrate procedure of entering the room.
  2. Students and teacher will discuss room rules.
  3. Students will demonstrate singing in a characteristic voice the song “Hello Song” <CSS K 1:2, 2:1)
  4. Students will be able to demonstrate how to “echo” by clapping, tapping and stomping. <CSS K 2:2, 3:3, 3:4>
  5. Students will explore high and low sounds with their voices. <CSS K 1:2, 2:1, 3:1, 3:3>
  6. Students will explore differences between slow and fast tempos. <CSS K 1:2, 3:1

Lesson: <Step by Step, Check for knowledge>

  1. Procedure: Entering The Room

Students will be instructed to enter the room, following each other around the circle while singing the song “Come Follow Me”.  This is to be done every day in Kindergarten Music.

Lyrics: “Come follow me, follow me, follow me” (starts high, then down low)

After students complete the circle, then Welcome the students to class, Introduce the teacher, and Prepare them what the rest of the lesson will be.

  1. Discussion: Rules

Students are to raise their hand to get the teacher’s attention.  Students are to stay on the outside of the circle unless asked to come into the circle or go to another area of the room.  Students are instructed when the teacher is talking, they are listening.  School rules are reinforced.

  1. Hello Song:

Students will be introduced to the Hello Song.  Echo Song.  Hello, How are you, I’m fine, Thank You. <Together> Hello Hello Hello to You and You. <Teacher directed, students named must come into circle and do a simple motion (1st day wave).> I see <name> 4x then <Together>

  1. Echo

Describe what an echo is, Me then You.  Clap a simple rhythm, wait for echo.  Check For Understanding and repeat as necessary.  Add tapping and stomping for simple rhythm, then CFU.  Add other simple rhythms.

Students will explore High and Low sounds with their voices.  Play a recording of whale sounds Ask what animal is making those sounds:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhaBsuDVISU)

Use a whale puppet to “talk whale” to the class.  Have students mimic whale sounds high (hold puppet up high) and low (hold puppet low).  Have a few students lead class in high and low using the puppet.

  1. Voice Exploration: Slide Whistle
  2. Tempo Exploration: Fast and Slow

Students will explore Fast and Slow movements to music.  Using a fast moving puppet and a slow moving puppet, ask the students which animal moves fast and which moves slow (whale vs. turtle).  Playing a simple pattern on the piano, have the students mimic each movement, while moving around the circle.  Alternate between the two speeds, adding stops in the music (no music, no motion).
