Introduction
Hello,
I'm Miss Nan, Belle Creeks in-house Occupational Therapist (OT). This is my 6th year at Belle Creek Charter School and I am excited for the coming year.
The official definition of what OT means is not very specific since we, as OT's, work in many different settings. It is easier to tell you that as an OT in the school setting I focus on many different areas. A few examples include:
Fine motor skills- legible handwriting, using scissors, opening a pencil box, opening/closing rings on 3 ring binder, using a combination lock.
Activities of daily living- putting a straw in a drink box, managing a food tray, managing clothing fasteners (think buttons, zippers, snaps), or loading a backpack.
Sensory- Being in a ready state to learn
The staff and I have been working hard on increasing our focus on good handwriting skills for all grade levels. This year I will be spending more time in the classrooms assisting the teachers during writing time and providing small group focus as may be needed.
If you have any questions or concerns or want any home ideas for promoting good handwriting skills please reach out.
