Introduction

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Hello!  My name is Laura Strasbaugh.  I will be teaching your child this year.  I am really looking forward to diving into the curriculum with the students.  I have taught fifth grade before and really enjoy teaching this age group.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Colorado.  After college, I worked as an educational assistant.  Finding out that I enjoyed teaching students, I went back to a post-graduate program at the University of California at Santa Barbara to obtain my teaching license.  I have endorsements in math, science, and elementary education.  I have taught at both the middle school and elementary school levels.

I have three children of my own.  I love to spend time with them.  In addition, I like to read, hike in the mountains, travel, and play board games.  I love animals and have two high energy Border Collies who love to perform tricks.

I am looking forward to getting to know your child this year.  I love the fact that the philosophy of Belle Creek Charter School is First, Comes Learning!   This will be the priority in our classroom.

Sincerely,

Laura Strasbaugh

 Our Week Ahead - August 14, 2023

This week in reading, we will continue our unit about personal narratives.  We will be reading and analyzing personal narratives by various authors.  The students will be writing a name narrative.  In addition, we will continue reviewing the parts of speech.  In math, we will continue to work in place value and look at number patterns.  There will be nightly homework assigned.  In Social Studies, we will continue our unit on world lakes. The students will learn where these lakes are located and whether they are fresh or saltwater.  They will also learn how these lakes provide resources to people.  There will be an assessment on this unit either at the end of this week or the beginning of next.  Next week we will begin a science unit where the students investigate matter. We will continue reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer together.  Either at the end of this week or the beginning of next, the students will write a book report summarizing either the entire book or a chapter within the book.  We have a spelling test this week.  The students have three spelling lists to pick from.  I have written the first list below.  The spelling test will be on Friday.  This week, the students will begin writing their homework in their planners.  Also, they should read twenty minutes a night as part of their homework.  Reading is the basis of all education.  Have a wonderful week!
